The Coma Recovery is a New Mexico prog-core outfit that wants your attention. While this doesn't scream "MESSAGE!" like Keenan Ivory Wayans did in Don't Be A Menace...it is close. That isn't bad; earnestness in music is welcome, especially after 30 seconds of listening to pop radio. But the old writing maxim of "show, don't tell" means something here too: things ain't deep just 'cause you say they are. Yet crunching, riff driven songs like" I left My Body in Oregon" and "Jet Ring Sent" succeed for the same reasons "Charm of a Pessimist" and " Capulet" come up short; the latter songs seem to run out of ideas halfway through and settle, for slowing it down to tired pop-punk breaks and jittery bass runs. Their heart is in the right place, and the ambition here is huge. The Coma Recovery just need to get past the sense of their own importance and deliver the goods. In rock, a spoonful of kick-ass helps the medicine go down.
