Mojave 3 - Puzzles Like You
Mojave 3 return with their follow-up to Spoon and Rafter, up-to-date my favorite of Neil Halstead's band. Puzzles Like You is a slight shift for the band, a little further away from the rootsier sound they had before into a pure pop territory. Songs are still ever so gentle, ebbing and flowing in and out resulting in a brighter and happier album. The album starts out in this vein with "Truck Driving Man", a super jangly pop song. This sort of upbeat pop vibe tends to lead us through the rest of the album. "Breaking The Ice" is one of the many standout tracks, with it's super catchy chorus and fun guitar line. We get a slight reminder of where the band has come from on the slightly twangy "Most Days" mostly due to the lapsteel contained within. They jump right back into the pop sound with "Big Star Baby". "Ghost Ship Waiting" is my favorite of the upbeat songs. It is undeniably catchy. The last track, "The Mutineer" is one of the loveliest songs of Mojave 3's career. Mojave 3 have successfully redefined themselves as a pop band.
