Two Gallants embarks on their dreaded sophomore journey but the self proclaimed "polk" (punk-folk) band has done quite well considering. I think the best thing about What The Toll Tells is that very few actually heard their debut. It's only now with Bright Eye's label Saddle Creek being a little more in the spotlight that some of the label's bands are seeing some reward. The music is raw but manages to keep rocking. There isn't too much of the folk thrown in. Only enough for charm, like on the second track "Steady Rollin'". The songs all have a good story to them, with the lyrics being quite prominent. The arrangements are sparse but really work with the Two Gallants' style. I think if you like the rawness of The Black Keys you would appreciate Two Gallants. It's a grower too. Give it two or three tries before you make up your mind.
