So he is the guy on all those covers! He actually played live this year! And yes, he still records according to his own solitary, frightening take on the mundane and the majestic. For all the mystery surrounding Jandek, he is quite possibly the only artist ever thought of as a sell-out just for appearing in public. If you have heard one Jandek record you have heard them all, with one major major difference: though you expect the claustrophobic, barely deft instrumentation, the cryptic, embarrassingly naked lyrics, what makes you keep listening to see where his adds or subtracts from the formula. Adding electric guitar or a strange new voice; going heavy on the drums; not using instruments at all, but chanting his haunted way through; a Jandek record is a chance to check in on someone we worry about, and to see how he's coping with his demons. Like every other Jandek record, there are great songs, and then there are songs that will stick with you longer than is healthy. "I've Been a Body." "I'm Sorry No." "If I Waited Twenty Hours." To listen to these is to hold your latest Devandra Banhart CD and watch it drip from your hands in lameness. Jandek, naked as ever, remains the artist.
