Recorded by generator in post-Katrina New Orleans, this latest effort by Greg Dulli and cast echoes both the edgy despair of the surroundings, and the sloppy rage of his former band, the Afghan Whigs. That's ironic, given that Dulli here seems to be reaching for some kind of peace with his demons, addressing them in an attempt not to keep on chronicling them, but to put them aside and find healing. Dulli and redemption still seem an odd couple, but here his struggle is so raw and honest, there is no doubt he's trying to win. The brooding beauty of "The Conversation" and "Underneath The Waves" contrast with the raw, Whigs-esque flirting with danger of "I'm Ready" or "Bonnie Brae." Redemption, and the struggle to win back what was lost to bad habits, is an almost Biblical theme. Dulli, more than most artists, has taken St. Augustine's prayer "Lord, make me chaste, but not yet!" to heart. On Powder Burns, his best Twilight Singers record in years, he seems ready to explore what real change might mean.

I think this album is deserving of a five star rating (10 as a user). It is probably comparable to what Dulli did with Gentlemen, but updated. A must for every indie music fan. Don't let The Twilight Singers suffer the same fate as the Afghan Whigs.
