Damn, this is a hard one to review. I'm having a hard time hearing Greg Graffin singing country songs. It's just not right. I've spent a better part of my life listening to Greg belting out Bad Religion punk songs so to hear him sing more like Bruce Springsteen just feels wrong. Once I got over my initial tribulations of this predicament I grew to respect what Graffin is trying to do on Cold As The Clay. Graffin is backed up by the Weakerthans here and they do a bang up job. Fellow Bad Religion member takes on production duty. Greg states that he was raised on old-time music from childhood family gatherings and that's where the influence of this album comes from. There is a great mix of traditional Americana songs and some that were actually penned by Graffin himself. I'll leave you to guess which is which. The talent that Graffin showcases on Cold As The Clay is big. Strumming, picking and singing like this is not an easy feat. Again, once you get over expecting the bombast of Bad Religion behind Greg's voice you can start to enjoy what Graffin has to offer.
I'm not sure that hardcore Bad Religion fans should head down this path but for those people who like artists such as Neko Case, Tim Easton, or even Will Oldham.
