Boister - Sister City
Boister sound like the band invited to play the wake in your living room. Every song on this 2 cd set oozes sadness and loss, but, like the other mourners, they have a whimsical relief about them , that, for another day at least, they are still alive and not in the box in front of them. Even heartbreaking songs like "Fern" and the title track offer ways out. Waltzing, funereal shuffles like " Chaim and "Letters Underwater" suggest that many of the ways out of sadness lie in booze, ragged company and momentary celebrations of ignorance. Songwriter/Singer Anne Watts conducts the march through loss and whimsy with a shy defiance; the voice on these songs, may feel a little shameful at being so emotionally naked, but there is power in knowing there is no other way to play it.
