I don't know if I'm alone in the feeling that the Umbrellas are quite a relief from a lot of the emo style bands that are out there. I know that Scott Windsor gets pegged as that but in reality there is much more heart and soul in his gentle yearnings, closer to that of Death Cab For Cutie than say, The Get Up Kids. Illuminare is a logical progression from the self titled debut album. It is a little more expansive and moody, if you can actually believe that. It's rare that Death Cab gets a plug for a "Try If You Like" but I think a lot of DCFC fans should check out Umbrellas. If you are trying to turn on said fans let them have a listen to the distant "Ships". On some of the tracks like "Crooked" I can hear a little Placebo influence, whether it's intentional or not. Fans of more aggressive music need to steer clear of Umbrellas. This is gentle pop and it is also damn fine music.
