I always find it hard to review a posthumous album. American V, logically the fifth in the Rick Rubin inspired American series is no different. While the brunt of this album was finished by Rick Rubin himself the vocal tracks are the thing to pay attention to. There are some songs you can almost hear death on Johnny Cash's voice. Like the superb "If You Could Read My Mind" and the forward looking "I'm Free From The Chain Gang Now". One of the finest songs of the American Cash era has to be "God's Gonna Cut You Down". It's a rowdy song, something you might think the old star wouldn't have left in him. So in essence, although Johnny Cash was an elder statesman we will still miss his output. A Hundred Highways is as good a way to exit our world as any. We'll miss you Johnny.
