It's disconcerting in the least to note that when talking about alternative rock CAKE does not come up as often as they should. Unfortunately CAKE has become one of those one or two song bands on everybody's ipod, a few of their more catchy tunes drown out the lyrical prowess and subtle but immensely effective musicianship of the rest of their work. As a band CAKE had some of their best chemistry on the 2004 album "Pressure Chief" at a modest 36:16 long listen "Pressure Chief" does one hell of a job packing in so many good tracks into a small package. After listening to the album about four times over I feel personality that the band is trying to bring our attention to the laziness of our ways and how absurd it is to take ourselves seriously as long as we are not willing to change with the times. Songs on the album like "Carbon Monoxide" and "Waiting" are blatant in their messages; "Carbon Monoxide" dealing with the condition of the environment and "Waiting" dealing with social injustices. Other song however or subtle even thought provoking with perhaps interpretive meanings. Anyway you slice it CAKE is a fantastic band that does not get the acknowledgment they deserve. "Pressure Chief" is just one example to attest to that, I can promise you that if your a fan of alternative/indie rock you'll not be disappointed with any CAKE album.
