I am of the camp that Remix albums tend to be a cash grab. Aside from a few tracks here and there, has a full remix album actually done anything to change music? No, it just changes the way an artist wanted his/her music to sound. Now, when you start messing with classic Motown tracks you are messing with religion. Luckily the remixers on Motown Remixed realized this and just add a bit of a modern feel to the songs without really messing with the general vibe of the song itself. The two best tracks on this set are both from Jackson Five: "I Want You Back" and "ABC". Another surprise is Edwin Starr's "War" reworked slightly by King Britt. I was also turned onto an artist that I hadn't heard before. The Undisputed Truth's "Smiling Faces Sometimes" is the root cause. Probably the worst song of the set is "My World Is Empty Without You" by Diana Ross & the Supremes. This isn't due to the remix, I just don't care for the song in the first place. But this is easily remedied by a cool version of The Temptations "Just My Imagination". So in the end, as usual, the originals always stand up on their own. Motown Remixed make these classics suitable for your local martini bar. Smooth and jazzy makes for a great listen on a hot patio.
