My Josh Rouse collection is getting to be quite diluted. He is such a consistent songwriter that it is hard to say no to one of his albums. Subtitulo is no exception. The last two albums had a bit of a theme going on, 1972 had the old pop/soul vibe going on where Nashville had a slight twangy edge. Subtitulo is an attempt at a bit of a Latin flavor and just like the previous two albums, there is just a slight hint of the overall theme going on. A song like "Wonderful" sounds like it could have been a Caetano Veloso song if Rouse was singing in Spanish. But the sunny Latin vibe is present on most of the songs, some a little more prevalent than others but there nonetheless. Apparently Rouse has made Spain his new home and obviously taken some influence from his surroundings. That is something I can appreciate, a songwriter who can allow his surroundings to not only influence their lyrics but their overall sound as well. One of the coolest tracks on the album is a duet with his girlfriend Paz Suay on "The Man Who". It sounds like a more poppy Britta Phillips and Dean Wareham. I don't think Subtitulo is one of Rouse's strongest albums but it is still a great one.
