The Sword - Age Of Winters
You may have heard about The Sword. They are a new metal band from Texas that is taking the hard rock/metal world by storm. The group manages to take a stoner rock approach but liven it up with a little more aggression. Think Fu Manchu if they laid off the dope for a while. Not saying that The Sword wouldn't be enhanced by a spliff or two. But it's hard to imagine Fu Manchu raging like "Iron Swan". Age Of Winters starts out with the thundering "Celestial Crown", a monolithic instrumental that kicks into "Barael's Blade", the first we are exposed to vocalist J.D. Cronise. Most of the songs boast a bit of a boogie rock feel, not unlike something a Black Sabbath would have done. "Lament For The Aurochs" is one that really stands out with the boogie feel. I think most metal fans would do themselves a favor by checking out The Sword's debut album. Age of Winters is a heavy slab but really not that abrasive.
