The Rakes - Capture/release
It's taken a while for someone to get the energy in the post-punk / dance-punk arena and it seems like it's a British group that has managed to do it. The Rakes pull of the sound by harnessing the aggressiveness and ferocity of traditional punk music while making it even more rhythmic and driving. The band manage to make most of the songs irresistibly singable (I had no choice on the catchy "22 Grand Job"). Songs like "Binary Love" tend to border on the DFA sound but keeps enough punk in tow that the sound is that much better. It seems like all the right production levels are there as well. Guitars overwhelming the vocals when necessary and then toned down when need. Paul Epworth gets the credit here (Bloc Party, Futureheads). There are so many good songs on Capture/Release making it a glorious debut. The more listens make it even that much better.
