NQ Arbuckle is a roots rock singer from the Toronto area. The Last Supper In A Cheap Town is Arbuckle's sophomore album with both albums being on Six Shooter Records. NQ has talent but I'm not sure it is really coming out on this album. The songs are strong but there is nothing really original being evoked from the album. It's the sort of album you can listen to multiple times and nothing really sticks. You can't say it's because lack of hooks because tracks like "I Can See The Moon" are like-able but not memorable. That is a good summation of the album, like-able but not memorable. I do like Arbuckles scratchy vocals and the musicianship is decent it just feels that maybe his heart isn't in this music. I think I would have to spend 5-10 listens before I fell for his stories and music. His voice is strong and almost has a bit of a Irish feel to it. One stand out track is the closer "Goodnight Irene On New Year's Eve". It has a nice swing to it. This sophomore album is the first "band" effort by NQ Arbuckle, with Neville (real name) forming a group to record and tour with. Another Canadian roots musician, Luke Doucet takes on production duties.
