Klein plays classic country tinged singer/songwriter tunes. You cannot listen to the moody beauty of "Dusty Rose" or " Visions of Faith" and feel in familiar, but comforting territory. Not that the songs themselves are comforting; they moan and mourn, and words echo over the guitar and harmonica at times as if they were not even there. Haunted and lonely count as memories that can be comfortable too; at least you've been there and can expect some of what you are feeling. Klein feels that, and when he sticks to that low moan, all is well. Less successful are slightly more uptempo tracks like "Truck Stop Love, "Mississippi Momma" in which his voice and stab at humor miss the mark. Still, this is a subtle little gem, from a guy who has not only absorbed the country mythos, but has also in the past explored other sounds. He once spent some time in West Africa, and even wrote opera in Mali in the local tongue. May more unexpected and welcome sources keep adding to his already rich cache.
