Heavens is the new project from Matt Skiba of Alkaline Trio along with one of his buddy from a few years back, Josiah Steinbeck. They met a few years ago when Matt moved to LA and ended up being roommates. Heavens ends up being much darker and moodier than Alkaline Trio. They lean heavily on Sisters of Mercy as an early influence but it also obvious that the two have been listen to Interpol and some of the other dark New York rock. With that influence thrown out you can't help but think, "Not Another Interpol". No, Heavens offer us a little more melody in the arrangements and the vocals aren't quite so bleak even though the material tends to be. I really like the deeper register of Skiba's voice on Patent Pending. His lower tone really works for this type of moody music. I don't think that Heavens will be a one-off project. It seems like they have a lot of strong material, meaning there isn't really a bad song on the album. If you are si It's great when Epitaph stretches out and tries something a little different. Patent Pending doesn't fit into the usual fare of the Epitaph roster.
