Whenever music grates on me I know there is something special there. That was the case with The Sound of Animals Fighting, a bit of a punk/avant garde collective where everyone of the members chose an animal to personify. From what I can figure former RX Bandit frontman Rich Balling is the mastermind behind Sound of Animals Fighting who does the production as well. He has put together quite the album for their second installment. Lover, The Lord Has Left Us comes off maybe a little closer to a soundtrack than a rock album. The songs are so different and disparate that they hardly deserve to coexist on the same album. That's not to say that it's not impressive. It is. Craig Owens of Chiodos fame can also be found taking the lead vocal position in a couple areas. "Prayers On Fire" is an interesting track with sanskrit style singing leading the way with hardly a pop influence to be found. "Horses In The Sky" is one of the more Mars Volta-ish moments and one of the loudest moments to be found on the album, easily my favorite track. We even get treated to some opera vocals on "Stockhousen, Es Ist Ihr Gehirn, Das Ich Suche", and some crazy background arrangements, mixed with some very lush vocals in English. Some of the lovelier moments include the orchestral "The Heretic". I get a little Frank Zappa feel on the album closer "There Can Be No Dispute That Monsters Live Among Us". Hardly a beat to it but an interesting vocal line. I don't think Lover, The Lord Has Left Us will go down as a classic but I think it fills a niche for fucked up music where few bands dare to go.
