Liam Singer's last record, 2004's The Empty Heart of the Chameleon, presented an artist ready to explode with ideas. From lush piano pop to brooding drone, it was one of the best releases of the year. With Our Secret..., Singer proves the well has far from run dry, and that the best may be yet to come. A Multi-instrumentalist, Singer this time experiments with vibes and church organ, as well as a little prepared piano, to create a moody, brooding meditation on loss and lies. Minimalist instrumentals ("frozen lake/dog heaven", "razor wire -second ascension") mix with brittle vocal showcases ("losing teeth", "Surprise, Surprise") to create an ominous but somehow tightly controlled world. Everything from a pin-drop to a scream seems to fit somewhere in his vision, as do any muted color you can think of. On this record, Singer proves he is a monster waiting to break big, or ready to break out a big monster.
