Anthrax - Anthrology: No Hit Wonders (1985-1991)
This review might show a little more of my roots than I want to show but if you aren't honest then what's the point. When I was in junior high I had this friend that tried and tried to turn me onto bands like Testament and Megadeth. He finally succeeded with a band called Anthrax. The album that sold me was their classic Among The Living which I still herald as one of the best metal albums ever. Anyway, I've been keeping my eyes open for a good compilation from the band but even with the release of the comprehensive Anthrology they still fail. There is only material from the Joey Belladonna era completely skipping the John Bush era altogether, which was impressive as well. So think of Anthrology as the only Belladonna era compilation you need. The older Return of the Killer A's attempted to combine the two but failed with not enough of Belladonna's songs. Now the earlier stuff on this comp is from their Fistful of Metal and Armed and Dangerous albums and they still sound pretty heavy but they don't really hold up as well as the later stuff. My favorite albums, Spreading The Disease, Among The living, State of Euphoria, and Persistence of Time are quite well represented making it a fine replacement for those albums in my collection (I call these compilations "space savers", not greatest hits). If you love the Belladonna era of Anthrax you can choose to get one of the lesser comps but No Hit Wonders does a great job of collecting all the winners. As for a complete anthology, why not do a double album, one of the Belladonna era and one of the Bush era? Seems appropriate. Work out, labels!

now here is a fun band. i remember having State Of Euphoria when it first came out. the single "i'm the man" had some alternate stuff on it that really kicked ass, live, no lyrics, censored lyrics, uncensored lyrics and a couple of different songs, "i'm the law" and another. this album is almost as good as a hole in the head. a lot of the songs i've never heard before, some good, some really good and some that just downright blow goats. it just doesn't have that "state of euphoria" "i'm the man" feel to it that i enjoy. but i give it an 8 because its anthrax and i love them.
