Yura Yura Teikoku have long been one of Japan's great psych bands. While others have gotten more famous abroad, and have more consistently louder, YYT have been more consistently interesting. Not that their music is plodding; far from it. Their most recent live record is a face-peeling testament to what the band can do with feedback and volume. On this record, though, the band uses noise intermittently, choosing instead a more hook-laden drone that explores silences as well as grooves. The slightly blues-y, trebly "2005 Nen Sekairyoko" leads things off, and "Robot Deshita" continues the groove, but for a rather long techno intro. Echoes of what they can be like live drive the massive "Kyusyo." With Sweet Spot Yura Yura Teikoku displays all their range in full, mature effect. This is a band any fan of heavy rock and noise needs to know.
