British drone legends return with what may be their best yet. It is certainly one of the most violent, face peeling releases of the year. The nine loose jams here feature the brutal guitar assault and free improv rhythms that made their return in 2003 so welcome. Formed in 1987 out of the Broken Flag collective, and still helmed by guitarist/visionary Matthew Bower, Skullflower were always at or near the top in tonal exploration. Tribulation finds the band at a majestic peak, especially on "Lost in the Blackened Gardens of Some Vast Star", and " Void of Roses." They really hit a powerful wall of distortion and feedback toward the end of the set; the closer, "In The Depths of The Stagnant Pond" practically dares you to survive it. A legendary band with a classic new release is hard to come by these days, unless you are the Buzzcocks or Mission of Burma. Skullflower belong on that mountain.
