The Mars Volta is definitely a group that is worth noting in the music history books. Omar Rodriguez-Lopez is nothing short of a musical genius and Amputechture simply proves this point. After touring to promote Frances the Mute, Rodriguez-Lopez visited Amsterdam. There he wrote what would eventually become Amputechture and what an album it turned out to be. However, this album is not for the casual listener. A majority of the 8 song album clock in anywhere from eight minutes to sixteen minutes. Clearly, Rodriguez-Lopez had something to prove with this album.

Each and every song carry with it a looming and almost eerie resonance that can only truly be portrayed by Cedric's menacing yet graceful vocals. Throughout the album, guitars whine, scream, holler, and do their best to make any sound but a whisper. The first track, "Vicarious Atonement," starts off almost too quietly to lead into the album's epic, "Tetragrammaton," which clocks in at a hair under seventeen minutes and carries with it all of the agonies Rodriguez-Lopez could possibly convey with a melody. Other tracks such as "Vermicide" and "Viscera Eyes" even manage to find a bit of mainstream catchiness and call back to Cedric Bixler-Zavala's At The Drive-In style vocals.

Amputechture is an excellent portrayal of a true musical genius but it is clearly not for the feint of heart and/or inexperienced ear.

This album had some highlights for me but it wasn't enough to re-ignite my passion for the Mars Volta. I still need to check out Bedlam though. Hopefully that will do the trick. Omar's vocals do still send shivers up my spine.
