2006 came and went and The Rapture released their follow-up to the much hyped Echoes with what seemed like no notice. Well, here I am catching up on unheard 2006 releases and I thought I would give Pieces Of The People We Love a shot and you know what, it ain't half bad. It ain't half good either but here goes my brief review of this album that no one seemed to care about. The band seems to have embraced the "dance" more than the "punk" side of dance-punk. The grooves on this album are pretty funky and with a slight remix you could throw this to any dance DJ to get people out on the dancefloor. The really funky "The Devil" lends itself nicely to this descriptive. The song right after this, "Whoo! Alright-Yeah... Uh Huh" is pretty groovy too. And even if this is the first time you have ventured a listen to the Rapture you might be impressed. There really isn't anything new to the Rapture's formula. They get some funky grooves with some somewhat aggressive vocals thrown overtop to keep it a little heavier. It just seemed like the boys had a hard time keeping this vibe going for the entire album. Same issue that they had on Echoes. Maybe a little more selective on their songs, eliminating boring tracks like "Calling Me" might have saved Pieces of the People We Love from falling into early obscurity. Again, there is enough good material on this album to warrant a purchase. But again, what were they thinking on "The Sound", one of the worst songs I had to listen to this year.
This year I'll be watching !!! to see if they will improve on this waning dance-punk movement. "Dance-punk is not dead!"

I don't know if I'll keep coming back to this album, but it was definitely good for a listen. I got kind of a Franz Ferdinand feel from them, myself.
