I’m not so sure that continuing to boast that a tune off your debut record went right into the machine and was used in a Kia commercial, but maybe I’m dense. At least wait until you suck before selling your music as product to sell snacks or cars. New York by way of Cleveland singer songwriter Andrew Scott Rosen’s 1998 debut did well enough, and included the aforementioned Kia jingle, “ Great Life.” Twisted Heart, his third release, features more of the same bright, slight power pop that fits snugly in many genre formats, and his music has done well on MTV, ESPN, XM Radio, etc. But in many of those cases, his songs were background music, not up front and standing on their own. The real test of tunes like “ Star”, the title track, “Churchbells and “Valium and Sodapop”, is whether or not they will stick in the listener’s memory as great songs, or what they heard used to shill chicken nuggets or motor oil. These songs, and most of the record, show a seriousness in topics and intent that could eventually create a solid voice with a lot to say. So far, the line between “Radio Friendly” and “Radio Pandering” seems crossed.
