Damn, I thought Old Crow Medicine Show was going to be a one-trick-pony but on their sophomore album, Big Iron World they have trumped their self-titled debut. The songs on Big Iron World sound like they are at least 50 years old. Some of them indeed are but to have these old antique songs hang out with brand new songs and not sound out of place is something to be proud of. Their sense of mountain music in the traditional vein can't be overlooked. Most of the songs are fairly upbeat but there are a few tracks that tend to depress. This is normal for songs that are trying to sound this old. Think about music of the era they are trying to depict, depression, no work, no money. They capture this nicely on a few songs. You can't help but feel that Big Iron World is a working class album. After improving on their self-titled album this much, Old Crow Medicine Show should be around for quite some time. This album was produced, as OCMS, by David Rawlings and you can hear much of his influence in the style of the album. Wife, Gillian Welch helps out with drums on a number of songs.
