"That Way Girl," the sound that kicks off Gravity Works-Fire Burns, and "Cigarette Hand"roar out at you like Big Star without the coke, believing the hope they sing about. Chad Rex rock with a power-pop by way of the Band sensibility. "Better Off" and "7 Lonely 2" add a sweet country touch to the mix. This is a confident and solid record, with more than a few sonic nods to their heroes. They can craft a good pop weeper, like "Crashed and Landing, " and can also fall into stale formula, as on the tepid "Cities by Hotels or the too reverent "Song for Paul Westerberg to Sing." "Andrea Again" is a great song, though it teeters on the line of being an All Shook Down leftover. If they can find the pocket of their own strengths and stay there, this is a band to watch.
