It was one of those weird things. I was wondering when a new Slayer album would be out and then lo-and-behold a new album showed up in the stores. It was very strange. Slayer is one of the forefathers of metal and to this day their early material still holds up as sounding as heavy now as it did when it came out. This must mean that Slayer is the fucking heaviest metal band ever. Now old-school Slayer fans will be excited that Christ Illusion presents the original lineup. Yup, Dave Lombardo is back and holy shit, he's welcome. He can do the panicked double bass drum or the slightly slower, trotting rhythm like on "Catatonic". "Eyes Of The Insane" is relentless with it's thundering drums and repetitive chugging riffs. Then the backlash anthem "Jihad" sounds like a damn bouncy ball being thrown into a canyon. "This Is God's War", Araya keeps yelling out. After I had time to take a breath when the album was complete I had to reassess where this album fits into in Slayer's completely impressive catalog. And really, it is just the logical extension. There is a lot of the melody from the Seasons and South of Heaven but there is also the intensity of Hell Awaits and the speed of Reign In Blood. Given time, Christ Illusion could become my favorite out of their catalog. But for now, that place is reserved for South Of Heaven. I'll never grow tired of Slayer. This band makes me feel alive. And Christ Illusion will go down as yet another great album. Will they ever falter?

I don't know man. It seems like their last couple of albums have been SO damn good. I do agree that Seasons is still better but Christ Illusion is better than a lot of the metal going today. At least what I have come across. Same goes for God Hates Us All.

Dennis, Dennis! What's this? Giving a short-sighted and altogether inappropriate album such a nice review...shame on you. On a more serious note, here's what's wrong with Christ Illusion: it is a Slayer album. As a Slayer album, it does not meet expectations in much the same way none of their albums since "Seasons In The Abyss" have. Perhaps my expectations are too high, but I like to look at it in my own way and when I do, I see a band who cannot stop floundering after the success of "Reign In Blood", and one who still, after all these years, can't decide whether they want to be famous or obscure. Sure, the return of original drummer Dave Lombardo is a plus, as is their new-found attention to tasty solos and the crux of the band's talent in King and Hannemann...but in the end this record is only slightly better than "God Hates Us All" (which was awful) and ultimately deserves to be mentioned alongside "South Of Heaven" as their most overrated album. Plenty of people love "Christ Illusion"...I can't listen to it without hearing shades of what used to be. The shades are all we're praising, the core and essence of what was Slayer died on the wings of the final notes of "Seasons In The Abyss"...
