A Collaboration between Western MA duo Vampire Belt and Jessica Rylan, a.k.a. Can't, produces a predictably unpredictable stew of the harrowing and abrasive. There is poetic truth in them thar scary noises. Some songs are both ridiculously good as they are frightening, witness "War Lips" and " Self-Titled Debutante." But the true collaboration is in the way the Belt's guitar and drums mix with Rylan's vocal scraping on "Hand in a Box" and "Glass Lion," where it is impossible not to be moved, even if only to the next room. This is a loud, insinuating record that will haunt you even as you whistle silly jokes to pretending you aren't shitting yourself. Key Cutter is a one-off that sounds like a band that is in synch for the long haul. May their paths cross again soon, just not when it's dark.
