Sugar - Beaster Ep
If you've read my review of Sugar's Copper Blue you already know that I am a fan of this era of Bob Mould's songwriting. Beaster is a companion piece to Copper Blue and while not quite as refined as CB it is every bit as essential. The album starts out with the fairly gentle "Come Around" instrumental and then Bob and company get right to the rock on "Tilted", one of my favorite Sugar tracks ever. It's one that demands the volume to be cranked. Then the shit hits the fan as "Judas Cradle" hits your ears. The feedback on this song is amazing. The only track out of the six songs that I could have done without was "Walking Away". It's got a spooky keyboard thing going on but I can't help but feel this EP would have been much more powerful without this song. Regardless, Beaster is a great addition to a Bob Mould collection.
