This second release by Juliana Hatfield-led Some Girls is a continuation of the big pop-rock sound for which both the debut and Hatfield's solo work is noted. The Stones-y "Hooray for LA" and "Poor Man's You" may owe more than a bit to Neil Young, but overall the band finds its own voice and stays in command of it. The bouncy "Social Control" and the dirty rocker "Rock or Pop?" ought to be huge hits in a real world, with the plaintive "He's on Drugs Again"-which may be the best song Hatfield has ever written-- not too far behind. Crushing Love will please alt-radio, but also those looking forward to a moment when Juliana Hatfield finds a band that can keep up with her as well as push her. Bassist Heidi Gluck and drummer Freda Love do just that. The set also comes with a DVD of live performances and tour notes.
