It must be a bit daunting to be an aggressive, socially aware singer/songwriter on a label with one of the best. Yet Hammel on Trial does his best in the shadow of Ani DiFranco, despite his tendency to stick to the surface, unlike the deep explorations of his labelmate. Here he points his finger at social hypocrisy on “ Inquiring Minds” and “Socializing”, and the culture wars on “ Coulter’s Snatch” and “Civil Disobedience.” An infatuation with fuzzy electric guitars saves “ Father’s Advice” and others from being more frat boy pot-shots than bullseye commentary. I’m all for anyone speaking her/his mind, especially since we are living in an age of cowering, but real change will not be kicked off by someone sitting above it all just busting balls.
