Zero 7 was a duo that came out strong with a powerful debut and lost a lot of people on their second album. With that behind them the group brings on the likes of international superstar Jose Gonzalez for a number of tracks for their new album, The Garden. It turns the band into a pop band rather than a lightweight electronic band. The Garden kicks off with the light-rock fare of "Futures" and it sets the pace for what is to come. On "Throw It All Away" they straddle the pop territory and some soul regions as well. It aches of comparison to Morcheeba. "Seeing Things" is the first instrumental on the album and sounds like a futuristic jazz track. It lays down a great groove and has all sorts of other elements going on to keep it interesting for the 5 minutes. Sia makes her return on "The Pageant of the Bizarre" with an amazingly strong voice and is the focal point there. It has a very cool Beach Boys style outro. She's also on the lovely "You're My Flame". The shortest track of the set, "Left Behind", features Jose's amazing voice again. It leaves me wanting more. But that's OK because "Today" give me exactly what I'm looking for. The Zero 7 boys have created the best album of their career here, yes, even better than their debut.
