According to Captain Tractor's press sheet North Of The Yellowhead took five years to make due to various issues. After such a battle they have finally got their new album on the shelves. Now I have to admit that I haven't checked in with the Edmonton band since Bought The Farm in 1997. This album presents a different band to me. Not quite as much in the roots territory (and yet still enough to keep old fans interested), they are a little more in the rock side of things. I think everyone can agree that these boys are good musicians but I do wonder about their songwriting. The songs are decent but seem to lack that hook that grabs your attention. Sure, there are times like on the title track, you are tempted to sing along but I found that these occasions didn't come enough. There is enough here for those people who like roots-rock to get into. But if you are just passing by then I would suggest you look elsewhere. Not only is Captain Tractor releasing a new album but they are also releasing a new beer. In partnership with Edmonton's Alley Kat Brewery the city's favorite band now has a new beer called Captain Tractor's Yellowhead Wheat Ale. I think you will only find it up in Edmonton though.
