I've always respected Aceyalone. One of the greatest underground hip hop artists today. And who doesn't like the production work of RJD2? His Dead Ringer album is already a classic. So the prospect of the two doing a project together really had my curiosity peaked. What we get on Magnificent City is the smooth but hard hitting lyrical capabilities of Aceyalone masterly mixed by RJD2 with some sweet samples thrown in to make the whole thing go down better than milk chocolate. The nice thing here is that Rjd2 has realized Aceyalone's vocal talent and doesn't try to downplay that at all. A's vocals are the focus of the album, with R's production and samples coming in second. Rjd2 does get a showcase on the lovely "A Sunday Mystery" but in the end it just sounds like it doesn't fit. The rest of the album is prime hip hop and needs to be heard by all. "Fire" is just screaming radio play. I love "Disconnected" too. It's hard hitting but not abrasive in any way. Even new people to hip hop might get into Magnificent City. I think Aceyalone is looking a little like Tone Loc on the cover, scary.
