While former Get-Up Kids guitarist and singer, Jim Suptic was trying to play down the GUK connection there was no way he was going to completely get away from comparisons with his new project, Blackpool Lights. And it's too bad because Blackpool Lights comparisons should be more in the lines of straight ahead power-pop instead of the emo leanings that Jim's former band had. And I'm a sucker for power-pop. "Blue Skies", "Goodnight To Romance" (sounding almost like Buffalo Tom or Lemonheads) and "Empty Tank" are a few of the albums finest moments. Think Jimmy Eat World instead of The Get Up Kids. That's a closer feel to what This Town's Disaster is all about. A very fine debut. So Jim's own statement, "This is just sincere, unpretentious rock music. We don't have a gimmick; what you see is what you get." couldn't be any more bang on. If you don't like it on first listen, you won't. It's kind of an all or nothing album. And there really isn't any reason why Get-Up Kids fans won't like this. It's catchy and poppy and features Suptic's great voice up front.

Jim Suptic creates a name for himself outside of The Get Up Kids, with Blackpool Lights. The overall sound of the album can easily be tied to The Replacements and even the new Lemonheads album; but don't let that fool you into thinking that this album is standardized rock 'n roll. Production quality is of the finest calibur, songs are varied and well paced throughout the entire album, and the songs generate a sense of pride instead of feeling lost (like so many songs do).
