This is the debut release for Austin mainstays Golden Bear, and it shows a confidence earned from many a night raging away in a competitive scene. As a result, this has the feel of a veteran band, one really happy with the sound of its own voice. “A Reason to be Proud” kicks things off with a taste of what is to come consistently through all the way: joyous power pop with excellent vocal harmonies and tight backbeat. Songwriter Chris “Grizzly” Gregory has a fine ear for brit-pop micro-stories (“ Amazing Edward”; “ Lady Soul”) as well as for solid Americana (“The Saddest Songs”; “ Santa Rosa”). For a debut to boast of having already been places–instead of announcing where it wants to go–golden Bear say it loud and proud. This is a literate, guitar driven monster with hooks, fun, and a little wisdom in there to boot.
