Coho - Things Change
The way this record kicks off, with “Offer”, you might brace yourself for some moody, risky acoustic pop that is not afraid of the morbid and painful. Then “I Will disappear” you may cringe and feel like the opening track may be one good shot from an otherwise generic emo band. There is plenty of emo here, but Northwest trio shows enough willingness to risk, that its occasional lapses into the maudlin are quickly atoned. “Until We Get There” and “UFO” haunt with ambient and drone interludes; “Get Up Get Up” and “Said and Done” are the kind of profound, Beatles/Band hybrids that Oasis always promised but never could deliver. Other tracks, like “ Life on Haitus” are emo by numbers, but this trio, born from another trio that lost a member to a fatal accident, rises above cliches at it has above personal tragedy to create a minor emotional peak on most of this debut.
