Connors has been a haunting conscience for decades, constantly refreshing the possibilities of both the blues and the avant-garde for the guitar. His spare, painterly lines recall modern compostioin as well as Celtic and gospel blues. This 2 disc set finds him, as usual, taking a handful of the familiar and making something majestic from it. The eight short pieces that make up “ Pretty as Ever” are haunting, but never sad. There is joy in honest emotion, and he washes his fragile lines of and into the echoes of themselves to create a beautiful web. “Dark is the Night, Cold is the Ground” is a duet with the master himself, John Fahey, and together they continue to construct that web that is Connors’ way to meet the world. His landscape echoes forever. Without getting too mystical–and Connors never does, either–this is profound, an almost Eastern approach to the blues, one which lets each note or chord hang around until it finds its moment. Then it explodes on the listener in all its potential grooves.
