Formed ten years ago in Norway by T. Nefas and Enzifer, Urgehal claim to be “real Black Metal”, still underground and uncompromising, as opposed, I suppose, to the faux black metal that has proliferated in the wake of the attention given to this Nordic genre in the early 90’s, when Burzum and other church burners made a bid to remake the world in Satan’s image. I’ve always liked Black Metal for its crunch and crust, and this is nice and crusty. And though it is scary, it’s not for the opinions presented. You could never in a million years believe fat stoners like Ozzy or Dio, or even Venom, bought the cartoonish gore they were selling. What is frightening about Black Metal is not that it is a menace, but that its followers believe it is. Plus the type of satanic images wallowed in are not even satanic, but 12th century Christian. In the bible, satan was just a ball-busting angel on a short leash. Anyway, are Urgehal underground because of the radical nature of their evil? Lend a pointy ear to “Satanic Black Metal in Hell!” “Gathered Under the Horns” or “Sentiment of Chaos” and decide for yourself. Here is Black Metal in all its bloated riff, oddly placed harmony, fetid, growling glory. Or not
