The Lawrence Arms is one of the best punk bands to come across my desk in quite some time. They are a 3-piece that come from Chicago and got their start back in 1999. The band took their name from a run-down building that they reside in and were finally evicted from, which is in a lower-class area of uptown Chicago. The Lawrence Arms released 3 albums on the little Asian Man label and now that they are ready for more exposure they chose to sign to Fat Wreck. Apathy and Exhaustion is their debut for Fat Wreck and what an album they delivered. Brendan (Bass) and Chris (Guitar) trade off vocal duties (they both have distinctive traits that make them very diverse like early Goo Goo Dolls) while Neil (Drums) rounds out the band. They don’t always try and go Mach 3 with their riffs like some of their labelmates. They think more about actual harmonies and strong songwriting. The Lawrence Arms is a band that thinks beyond punk and incorporate other styles into their songwriting. With the dual songwriter / singer approach they have a broad base that they cover. Watch for The Lawrence Arms to become a new big name in Punk rock.
