Don't you just love charity CDs? What better reason for a bunch of varied musicians to get together and record some great music. We've had the amazing Sweet Relief CDs leading the way, setting the standard for what these fund raising CDs should be. Graciously is a Gulf Relief effort put together by the folks at Wavelab studios and Funzalo records, both based in Tucson, AZ. For being a relatively small label they managed to get some pretty interesting and varied artists. 1/3 of the proceeds of Graciously will be donated to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. The albums starts out with Steve Wynn and the Miracle 3 doing a track called "Riverside". I am unfamiliar with Steve's work outside of The Dream Syndicate but this song has got me interested. The Calexico song, "Griptape Heart" sounds more like the Jayhawks than Calexico. It's a great track though. One of my favorite bands that you've never heard, Richmond Fontaine is included here with a song called "The Gits". Not their strongest track to date but fine just the same. Other artists included on this Compilation include Tony Furtado, Amelia White, DeVotchKa, John Doe and Virgil Shaw (this track is awesome!), Friends of Dean Martinez (doing a lazy rendition of "Moon River"), Robyn Hitchock, and Nik Freitas. One of the coolest tracks has to be Howe Gelb and Scout Niblett's medley of "I Want Candy/I Know What Boys Want/Who Do You Love". It's absolutely mindblowing. It's a fairly strong release and should be picked up just for the cause alone.
