Former members of space rockers Calliope Carmen Paradise and Jason Landtrip set out with this debut, a shimmering pop record that has some bite to it. Most of that bite is provided by Landtrip’s guitar, which wavers nicely between short/sharp and unhinged, helping most of the melodies avoid the lethal pop cliches lurking here. Paradise’s voice ranges from breathy to cloying, though on “Reflections of the Sky” and “California” she is particularly effecting. “Angry Rapids” and “Daydreams” are just flat out great pop. The Good Mornings are off to a strong start here. While not as crunchy as you would expect from a Michigan band, these Lansing natives make a joyful noise, and have produced a great pop record in an era when great pop is hard to come by.
