Copeland is an interesting band. I know I'm reviewing In Motion after the release of their Eat, Sleep, Repeat album but regardless I think In Motion deserves a review. While Copeland isn't aggressive enough to warrant an emo label it does have some things in common. Vocalist Aaron Marsh's voice is very gentle and wispy but it works for the piano arrangements that the band creates. It harkens back a little to the lush 80s pop of bands like When In Rome etc. There are some songs that, if they band wrote an entire album of, would be a great rock record. (The opener "No One Really Wins" is a huge rock song.) "Pin Your Wings" is simple in principle but the delivery is what makes this song so special. And then "Sleep" screams Ben Folds to me. When you listen to tracks like the layered and gentle "Choose The One Who Loves You More" you can't help but wonder if Copeland want to be emo but just didn't have the balls. It doesn't matter though. If you can handle beautiful music then you should check out In Motion. It's worth a listen. And I'm not sure if it is still being offered with the disc anymore but my copy has a live session with 4 songs recorded at Sony Connect.
