Joe Lally - There To Here
Remember Joe Lally? Didn't think so. He's the other, other guy in Fugazi. You know, the guy who plays the bass? Not Brendan, not Ian and not Guy. Anyway, There To Here is Lally's turn to shine as a songwriter and a frontman. Don't think of Fugazi when you think of Lally's solo work. There is a little of the same vibe but this is much gentler and way more sparse, as it is just bass and drums (on occasion) as well as his gentle, matter-of-fact vocals. His songs are intelligent and quite easy to listen too. There is a groove on each song that gets your head bobbing nicely (especially on tracks like "The Resigned"). On the odd occasion there is also a bit of guitar introduced, like on "Billiards". Then there is the acappella track called "Songs and Daughters". Not bad but not super either. There To Here isn't groundbreaking but it does prove Joe is a great songwriter as well. I think if anyone can pull of songs as sparse as this deserves kudos.
