Cibo Matto just don't put out enough material. Yuka Honda has been getting all the press in the past few years with Sean Lennon. Well now we get to look forward to Miho Hatori's debut solo album and what a treat it is. If you like Bjork you need to drop everything you are doing and check out the lovely Ecdysis (def. The process of shedding old skin, quite appropriate for this album and artist). Miho mashes up music from all over the world to create the lush and gentle masterpiece. It does take a couple listens but instantly you are taken by the laid back nature of the album. The thing I can't believe is how well all of these styles and genres meld together. The album opens with Hatori whispering in your ear as the title track gets underway. Then she starts singing with a Bjork-like vocal. Then she moves into "A Song For Kids" which sounds like a Japanese children's sing-along. "Barracuda" is not a cover of the Heart song. No, it's funky jazz track that is my favorite on the set with a very groovy rhythm driving the song to completion. On the last track, "Amazona", it could easily fit onto a Bebel Gilberto album. These are just a few of the songs and a few of the styles that Miho uses on Ecdysis. This is a fun album and quite easy to listen to.
