44 Long is a power pop group that comes to us from Portland, OR. Hangover Heights Part 2 is the band's third album and while I haven't heard the first two albums I might suggest that this is the group's finest moment as well. The music here harkens back to the day when powerpop was trying to make a breakthrough and just couldn't quite do it. You know, the Gigolo Aunts, Superdrag, the Figgs and other bands that just couldn't catch a break. I think it's different for a band like this in the days of the digital age. In the 90s bands had to push album sales through retail outlets where 44 Long has it easy with digital distribution. Word of mouth should make this catchy band a cult favorite. The songs are gentle, especially one's like "All The Way" in which they hardly even get going but the vocal delivery has to be heard in order to understand the charisma this band has. Or the darker "Don't Let Me Die Today", a song that tries to have a sunny outlook on a grim subject. Brian Berg writes all of the songs and plays everything on Hangover and does a great job. There is some help from a few friends but Brian takes on the lion's share. There isn't really a song that doesn't deserve to be on this album. I think the only thing that could have helped out this album is a bit of a warmer production. Otherwise, another great power pop album will sit nicely next to my Figgs collection.
