Everybody in indie music knows the name Tom Rothrock. He has been in the production business for a number of years and has helped make a couple hits like Beck's Odelay and Mellow Gold and one of my favorites, . Well, Rothrock has now completed his first solo outing and it is entitled Resonator. It is an instrumental album but don't let that scare you off. You see, Tom has a great ear for fusing blues and beats. Resonator isn't even that long, cutting out at under 35 minutes. There is so much diversity in Resonator that it reads just like a movie soundtrack. One of the many standout tracks is "Minor 12", a very mellow and moody track that delivers the somber mood very nicely. But the best track is the upbeat blues track "Darker Blues" that opens the album up. "Overdose Hotel" is an aptly named song as well. Imagine walking into your hotel room, back from an errand only to find your spouse overdosed on the bed. That's the scene this song poses. Rothrock gives us a very moody and diverse album that seems like it was done to get these demons out of his head.
