Why not? Rock has been around long enough that oldsters need not fear getting up and continuing to bring the noise. It isn’t always great, but rock, like any other genre, can be played with authority well into the twilight years. While the Stones may be wise to cut down on the rockers that force their 60-something singer to prance, the Dolls rock just fine, with David Johansen’s more than reviving his pre-punk god persona and rocking with grace. Aside from the deaths of, well, everyone except for Johansen and Sylvian Sylvian, this record would fit admirably in around 1975, 1976. “We’re All in Love,” “Plenty of Music”, “Dance Like a Monkey” are legit rockers that Axl Rose wish he wrote. “Maimed Happiness,” “Fishnets and Cigarettes,” and “Dancing on the Lip of a Volcano” are only missing Johnny Thunders in theory. The attitude that drove the original Dolls to the head of the “new sound” back then—snotty, androgynous, wasted, still has teeth. And if “Take a Good Look at my Good Looks” is not a classic by tomorrow, then it the reunion was not worth it beyond the payday. The New York Dolls should only reunite to save us, and this record shows they still have it in them to try.
