Surprising to note is a slight degression between Floyd's debut and this, their 2nd effort. Piper's appeal was the strangeness and tenseness that showed up big in the songwriting side of things, and "A Saucerful Of Secrets" fails to capture any of that. What it does is mark the beginning of a transisition, and it's evident in songs like "Let There Be More Light" and "Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun". Each song feels more carefully laid out, structured and cared for. The only problem was the residue of their initial appeal, and that wouldn't be fully shed for several more albums. Luckily, over that time they would improve drastically in all aspects of bandhood.
